The Complete Sherlock Holmes | BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS & TBR
The cover, the inside cover, the spine, the pages themselves are gorgeous - well done to whomever designed the book because it is just wonderful.
I'm part way through it and have been meaning to finish it, but I don't want to rush it either. It's not exactly light reading, but it's perfect when you just want to escape into another world with a cup of tea! ☕
Have you read any of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries? I think the TV shows that have focused on Sherlock Holmes retellings have helped to renew interest in these stories. I've been watching the BBC's Sherlock for a while now, and have been really loving the modern interpretation of the characters and storylines.
I also really appreciate what the writers have done in Elementary, although its aims are similar to Sherlock, I treat them entirely separately and enjoy watching both. Seeing Sherlock and Watson based in New York is really refreshing, as is Elementary's writers retelling of Sherlock's substance abuse. I also love Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson. Liu's presence as the other key leading role further distinguishes it Elementary from Sherlock - Joan's voice builds up the story and offers a (much needed) female perspective on the projects they work on together, as does the greater diversity in Elementary's cast.
If you like crime dramas I'd suggest giving both shows a go. Sherlock definitely has a more somber tone to its narrative, but the dry British humor and wit/banter is definitely embedded throughout the series. And although Elementary is slightly more upbeat, it would be remiss to overlook the seriousness of the content it discusses and its more poignant moments. It has a nice balance of shadow and light, as my old high school art teacher would say.
Let me know if you've read any of the Sherlock stories, or if you've watched either of the TV shows mentioned. I love chatting to people about books and TV shows.
Happy reading!
